Something Old, Something New
As much as we love when people are completely original and unique with their big day, there is also something to be said for traditions!
Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue-and a Silver Sixpence in her Shoe.- (Okay, the last part has been mostly left out over the last little while, mostly because they were taken out of circulation in 1980).
Something Old- remembering your roots. This symbolizes continuity from your old life, into your new life. Often this takes on the form of an old piece of jewelry (either worn or wrapped around the bouquet), a piece of your grandmother's gown sewn into your dress, etc. Something New- Symbolizes hope and optimism for your future. Often the wedding band itself serves this purpose. Something Borrowed- Specifically something borrowed from a happily married couple, under the assumption that the luck will carry over. This could be a veil, hairpiece, jewelry, etc.
Something Blue- In ancient Rome brides worn blue to symbolize love and fidelity. These days, it is common to sew your name in blue on the inside of your gown (this also makes an heirloom gown even more special if the tradition continues!).
Silver Sixpence in her Show- Meant to give the couple financial wealth and security.
In lieu of the above ideas, we also love the idea of creating a pin that symbolizes all of the above! You can find a great DIY Article about this idea over at Something Turquoise.
